Akdeniz University Radio, within the Faculty of Communication, started making its first broadcasts on FM Band 95.00 MHZ on October 2, 2000. The broadcasts were made with the Italian-made RVR Elettronica VJ 1000 brand 1KW power FM transmitter, 50 m away in the garden of Kepez Aşır Aksu State Hospital, which was affiliated with Akdeniz University in those years. The high tower was made from an antenna system. Radio broadcast studios were located on the 2nd floor of the Atatürk Conference Hall affiliated with the Rectorate. Founding Dean Prof. Hikmet Seçim took part in the radio broadcast preparations, started in 1999. Equipment procurement, transmitter antenna installation and studio construction works were completed in 2000, under the supervision of Mehmet Karavit from TRT Ankara Radio, in coordination with Akdeniz University Technical Sciences Vocational School Communication Technology Program and Akdeniz University Construction Department. Antalya University Development and Support Foundation's support was provided for the purchase of the equipment. The studios were designed based on the TRT Petek studio prototype, consisting of 1 program and 1 continuity studio. In the studios, there were 4 computers with digital sound editing facilities, 2 DAT, 3 MD players, 2 audio tape decks, 16-channel digital mixer, tuner, CD-DVD player and phone patch as basic radio broadcasting devices. The connection between the studio and Kepez was provided by a radio-link device operating between 1.4-2.6 GHz.
However, the broadcasts had to be stopped in 2001 when the prosecutor's office launched an investigation upon complaints that the broadcasts were unauthorized according to the RTÜK law. Later, in 2002, with the law no. 4756, Article 24 of the law no. 3984 was amended and communication faculties were given the right to broadcast, and efforts to re-establish publications began. Meanwhile, the studios were moved to the upper floor of the Central Classrooms, the Kepez transmitter was also maintained and 91.3 MHZ was chosen as the frequency. The broadcasts, which resumed at the end of 2003, were short-lived and were suspended again at the end of 2004 due to financial difficulties. During Prof. Dr. Ümit Atabek's deanship, the transmitter was moved to the Star Radio-TV transmitter tower belonging to Doğan Broadcasting Group in the Kepez region in 2007, as the old tower became dysfunctional. With a protocol, transmitter operation began to be carried out more professionally and the broadcast area was expanded thanks to the higher antenna tower. The studios were moved to the new building of the Faculty and a new radio-link device was purchased and studio transmitter transmission was improved. With the addition of the Lecturer Suat Erdöl to the staff in 2006, the RDS feature was added to the broadcasts that were restarted on 91.3 MHz in 2007, and the studio facilities were improved in the same year. In this new period, Üniversitesi FM has adopted a broadcasting approach that focuses on polyphonic contemporary music forms instead of popular music, in line with the principles and understanding of the music revolution initiated by Atatürk in 1935.
UNIFM, which is the favourite of the application units today, has strengthened its ties with the city of Antalya and plays an active role in promoting and announcing art and cultural events in the city.
With the Radio Theatre works, it blew the winds of nostalgia in the skies of Antalya and performed the first phase with the actors of the Antalya State Theatre and in the second phase with the students within the radio workshop. Internet broadcasting continues on its own website and platforms. Recently, studies on Podcast content have been continuing.
By trying to strengthen the technical infrastructure for digital broadcasting, it is aimed to carry out works that will make a splash with the contents that will be conveyed to the public in the near future.
